ROUTE DESCRIPTION (Updated 8th July 2018)

Leave Car/Coach Park and follow signs for Pitlochry centre. At main road turn left, and at Larchwood Road turn right. Follow road uphill bearing left, then turning right into Golf Course Road and continue to reach an attractive pond called 'The Cuilc'. Turn right and continue to follow Golf Course Road to reach Pitlochry Golf Course. Continue ahead on minor road for appx. 700m to reach t-junction. Turn right, pass Pitfourie Farm on left and follow lane downhill and round right hand bend to reach Kirkmichael Road (A924) by the Moulin Hotel. Turn left on Kirkmichael Road keeping to right hand footpath parallel with road uphill for appx. 750 to lay by/car park

Q1- Which distillery is mentioned on the sign “Award Winners”?

Follow road uphill and to Kinnaird. Immediately before first house on right turn right through wooden gate onto footpath signposted “Black Spout 1”. Follow footpath downhill following left hand edge of field. At corner of field cross stile and go ahead crossing second stile to continue to follow footpath with stream on left and wire fence on right. Cross wooden bridge and turn left signpost “Black Spout ¾”

Go ahead through gate on footpath. At houses bear left on footpath alongside stream to reach tarmaced area. After 10m turn left on tarmac track signposted “Moulin Path-Black Spout ½”. After 40m as track bears right turn left on footpath by metal gates. Go ahead on footpath between wire fences to reach gate. Go ahead across wooden bridge and bear right on footpath uphill through trees signposted “Black Spout Wood ½”.

At top of incline, turn left through kissing gate and follow footpath ahead across field towards gate in woods. Through kissing gate and ahead across wooden bridge and up steps. Ahead on footpath uphill signpost “Path to Blackspout”. At junction by house continue ahead to footpath sign “Black Spout ¼”. At fork in path bear left uphill at next junction turn right sign post “Blackspout” follow footpath downhill alongside waterfall to reach viewing platform.

Q2- Who constructed the viewing platform?

Turn right on footpath downhill. At V junction bear left following main path downhill to reach junction with track. Turn left signposted Car Park, and follow track with golf course on right. After appx 200m by car park, bear right and follow track as it becomes a tarmac lane to go under railway bridge to reach T junction with road.

Turn right to pass Blair Atholl distillery, at end of distillery turn left crossing road with care into Bridge Road. Immediately before river bridge, turn right down steps signpost “Riverside Path-Suspension Bridge” At bottom of steps turn left with river on left. As footpath emerges at corner of playing field, continue ahead on track. Just before wooden sheds and children’s play area, turn left on footpath to cross wooden bridge. Turn left on tarmac path and cross river on suspension bridge. At junction with road.

Q3- How far to Garry Bridge?

Turn right signpost “Dam and Fish Ladder”, follow road for appx 300m passing Festival Theatre on left to reach dam and power station. Ahead on power station road. Follow the "Public Access to Fish Ladder/Dam Visitor Centre" signs. Firstly past the fish ladder on your right then at the end up the steps, around to the right then left into the "corridor" with meshed windows on your right. Continue over dam going left then right to reach the metal gates at the end of the dam.

Q4- Just past the gate on your left is a brass plaque, when did the Countess of Arlie make the block?

With your back to the dam go right up slope then left up the steps beside the dam visitor centre. At the top follow the building turning right across entrance to join the footpath going down the "100 steps" to the river. Follow river, on your right, keeping houses on your left until you arrive at the suspension bridge

Follow tarmac path to reach junction with road. Turn right on road ignoring all turnings.Immediately after passing under railway bridge, turn left on footpath “Public Toilets and Railway Station”. Follow footpath with wooden fence on left, at cross tracks continue ahead signpost “Railway Station”. Go up slope and ahead to pass railway station. As road turns right, turn left into coach park. Through coach park to return to car park and end of walk.
