DIRECTIONS FROM NEAREST TOWN: Ilkley - Bolton Abbey is well sign posted from the A65 between Ilkley and Skipton.
COACH & CAR PARKING: There is ample parking at Riverside Car Park  Bolton Abbey, however this is a private estate and a fee is payable. There is additional Car & Coach Parking in Bolton Abbey village (which is also part of the estate) from where a short walk enables walkers to join the route at Bolton Priory. There is a very limited amount of FREE PARKING at Barden Bridge.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Bolton Abbey is fairly well served with Public Transport from Ilkley. Ilkley can easily be reached by train from Leeds.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION (Updated 30th August 2021)

Leave the Cavendish Pavilion on footpath Strid Wood Nature Trails, and with river on your right enter Strid Wood. After 50m turn right and follow blue waymarked trail to river ignoring main track. Continue on the blue trail alongside river then take steps up to cross main track and on to blue trail at high level through trees. Eventually at junction of paths follow blue trail down to river and Strid.

Q1 - On notice board how deep is the gorge here?

Retrace steps to junction, turn right now following green marker passing seated enclosure. In 20m at path junction keep on path at high level, green trail signed Barden Bridge. Follow to next junction continue on trail, Barden Bridge parallel with river to end of Strid Wood. At end of wood continue ahead through meadowland with river on right to pass Victorian Aquaduct and eventually reach Barden Bridge

Q2 - Just before Barden Bridge, there is a semi-circular wall with seats in it.  How many seats?

Cross over the bridge and immediately turn right on Dales Way. Follow riverside path for appx 3600m through fields and woods keeping the river on your right haqnd side to eventually return to the bridge at Cavendish Pavilion. Cross bridge.

Q3 - On metal sign who re opened the bridge in 1989?

Turn left sign post Priory Ruins, and follow riverside path through car park with river on left. Through gate and continue on path across field and climb steps to reach memorial fountain.

Q4 - On the fountain what month was Fredrick Charles Cavendish born ?

From the Fountain continue on path beside road and go through gate signed Bolton Abbey Village. Immediately after passing church, turn left and go through left hand archway. Follow main path through ruins and graveyard and descend steps to riverside and bridge.

Q5 - At the bridge, how far is it to Storiths?

Cross footbridge. Turn left and climb steps uphill on gravel track into woodland continue at high level passing play areas "The Warren" and "The Slide" and large fallen tree with hundreds of embedded coins....strange. Continue on the track downhill to eventually reach the ford at Pickles Beck. Cross over the beck at the small bridge to right and immediately turn left back to the river, through gate with river on left to reach Cavendish Bridge. Cross Cavendish Bridge towards the pavilion, and end of walk
